Hand carving one wooden coffin wasn't enough punishment, we had to make another.  Shocked

I've had my mind on making one in a spider web pattern for years, since the first one really.  Finally got around to it and the prop contest at Halloween Extreme pushed us to get it done.

This coffin was a huge joint effort between the Prince and I, following my concept and design he did most of the web work really and of course the construction.  Cool  My biggest warning on it was "Don't touch my spider!"  LOL!

It all starts with pine board.

Designing this one was tough, I went through several designs, center or offset, how to arrange the webbing, how far apart the strands should be.  Settled on center with spider facing down.  The sides were their own festival of drawing and erasing, drawing and erasing, before the final design was established.

I like lighting it from within and chose purple rope lighting for this one.  Made sure to widen the strips that would be left along the outer edges to conceal the lighting from view.

Outlined what was to be cut out with marker.  "Don't touch my spider!"  LOL!

The legs were going to be thin so I tried to position them as much as possible on top of webbing so I could carve them out of that thicker piece rather than risk them snapping from being too delicate.

Alrighty then.  Everything cut out, on to carving out the spider and softening the edges on the webs.

Are we having fun yet? Tongue

Dremel and sanding work done!  Yay!

Now what?  Believe it or not we still weren't sure how we were going to stain this.  Shocked   Dark or light?  A more traditional wood stain color or reddish?  Would black stain be too dark to tell it was real wood?  The indecision was rough.

Being based on a Black Widow I made the call for black stain.  If you wipe it off fairly quickly you can still see the wood grain.  It is darker than I had hoped, but I still like it.

Pieces, pieces everywhere.

They actually aren't 100% done but close enough to get it to the show.  The pieces need to be lightly sanded again and a second coat of varnish applied.  I may actually do that some day.  Tongue

Dry brushed gold on the spider to help bring it out of it's black background.  The rope-look edging around the bottom is also brushed with gold paint.

Close up of the Black Widow.  The leggies had some problems due to the tool being originally used to cut out the wood, we have since gotten better equipment.

Next it needed an occupant.  Cheesy

I think this is a Walgreen's skelly we got cheap since it was missing part of a leg.  Gave it the plastic shopping bag/heat gun corpsing treatment.

A few coats of paint later:

I think he could use some eyeballs but I don't have any at hand right now.

Beautiful Build.  Nice documentation of your steps.     A lot of work.    Congratulations on your Win !    Can't wait to see what you will do next.   Do you have build pictures of the first coffin?

Guess , I will have to dust off photobucket Sad  So I can post the pics I took , of you , and your win.   Tried the browse file  :  and resizing.  That didn't work.

That is many hours of work. 99% of people will never understand the amount of time in this prop. It was a very nice piece of art. One that few will ever be able to do.
